Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.
Long before streaming, playlists, and algorithms decided what we should hear next, music meant radio stations, record stores, cassettes, CDs, mixtapes, and waiting for your favorite song to come on. It meant hearing something for the first time and immediately needing to know who sang it.
For me, it eventually became more than something I listened to. It became part of my career.
I started in radio, spending years behind a microphone and surrounded by music every day. Eventually, my career took me in a completely different direction into technology, but the love of radio and music never really went anywhere.
Neither did the collection.
Vinyl. CDs. Digital music. Albums I have owned for decades and albums I am still discovering today. There are songs connected to places, people, jobs, road trips, summers, bad haircuts, old cars, and moments I had completely forgotten until the first few seconds of a song brought them rushing back.
That is really what The Variety Station is about.
I wanted to create a place where music doesn't have to fit neatly into one little box.
You'll hear the '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000s, and newer music. Pop, rock, New Wave, Adult Contemporary, Classic Hits, ballads, forgotten songs, huge hits, and occasionally something that makes you say, "I haven't heard THIS in years."
That's the fun of it.
I'm not interested in building a station where the same tiny group of songs repeats endlessly because somebody decided those are the only records people remember.
There is way too much great music for that.
This blog will be another part of that journey.
I'll talk about albums, artists, songs, radio, records, music memories, forgotten favorites, new discoveries, and whatever else happens to come spinning out of the speakers.
Some posts might be about an album I've loved forever. Others might be about something I found buried in my collection. There will probably be plenty of stories about radio along the way too.
Most importantly, I want The Variety Station to feel like a place for people who still genuinely love music.
Not just background noise.
Music you remember.
Music you forgot.
Music you haven't discovered yet.
And music that can somehow transport you back 30 years before the chorus even starts.
That's why I'm doing this.
The Variety Station is my way of getting back to something that has always mattered to me and sharing it with anyone who wants to come along for the ride.
So turn it up, dig through the collection, and stay awhile.
There's a lot of music left to play.
