The Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays

Today's Song of the Day comes from the legendary Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats. I have never been a big fan of Monday, as I always feel like I am just waiting to return to work, and Monday is that evil day. We humans get programmed so easily to fall into a regular pattern, and it sucks. I always get a bit down in the dumps around 2 p.m. on Sunday as I keep thinking about work. There is so much to do on weekends, and they go by way too fast. There is not enough time to L

The inspiration behind the song came from a tragic event that occurred on January 29, 1979, in San Diego, California. A 16-year-old girl named Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire on the Grover Cleveland Elementary School across the street from her house, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer. When asked by a reporter why she did it, she replied, "I don't like Mondays." Her response became the basis for Geldof's song.

The track climbed to #73 on the Hot 100 but was #1 on the UK Singles chart. If you don't like Monday, I encourage you to sing at the top of your lungs as we get through this day together.
